Public procurement to support climate change mitigation

Procurement offers enormous potential to support climate change mitigation measures. Europe’s public authorities are major consumers. By using their purchasing power to choose eco-friendly goods, services and works, they play a key role to foster sustainable consumption and production.  Green Public Procurement (GPP) is also a strong stimulus for eco-innovation. In fact, it stimulates a critical mass of demand for more sustainable goods and services which otherwise would not easily get onto the market. But there are also barriers that need to be overcome.

The XPRESS project gives support for Public Procurements to facilitate the collaboration between SMEs and public sector for the development and adoption in renewables in regions. The general objective is to facilitate the introduction of innovative Renewable Energy Supply (RES) technologies and increase the share of renewable energy in the final energy consumption.

The European secretariat of Climate Alliance and together with Climate Alliance Italy are working within a consortium of 16 partners from UK, Norway, Sweden, Spain, Denmark, Slovakia, Portugal and Belgium led by The Agency for the Promotion of European Research (APRE), Italy.  Climate Alliance will facilitate the direct dialogue between local public authorities and innovative SMEs. Co-creation workshops will be organized to map the needs and the potentials of local authorities and innovative SMEs.

Project funding period: September 2019  -  August 2022
