Renewable energy: Challenges, strategies and examples from Amazonia
24 September 2026, 15:00 – 16:00
Online
Pre-CAIC Session 2026
Energy demand (particularly for electricity and transport) is rising steadily, even in remote indigenous communities. As only a few communities are connected to the public electricity grid, access to energy remains a major challenge for many indigenous communities in Amazonia. At the same time, energy projects and the extraction of fossil fuels and raw materials often have significant impacts on ecosystems, the climate and the livelihoods of indigenous peoples.
This online workshop will explore the links between resource extraction, climate action and the protection of indigenous territories in the Amazon region, and will present strategies for the use of renewable energy in indigenous territories, illustrated with concrete examples. The focus will be on issues of local participation, cultural sensitivity and long-term sustainability. The workshop provides a space for exchange and mutual learning between European local authorities and representatives of indigenous communities.
This event will be held in English and Spanish with simultaneous interpretation.
