Taking responsiblility for the climate

If we are to act locally on climate and take responsibility with a global perspective, we must work to prevent large-scale rainforest destruction.

With the Climate Fund, we offer a concrete opportunity to halt this destruction. With our member the Autonomous Territorial Government of the Wampís (GTANW), we want to use the Climate Fund to support local projects, preserve the indigenous territory, and thereby make a concrete contribution to global climate action.

Second project of the Climate Fund

Establishing agroforestry systems

30 Wampís families are being supported in sustainably planting cocoa and native tree species. The aim is to protect the soil, preserve the forest structure and create sources of income for the families.

Establishing sustainable aquaculture

A total of ten sustainable fish ponds are to be created to improve local food security and provide families with additional sources of income through the sale of surplus fish at the local markets.

Capacity building & materials

The participating families are trained both in setting up agroforestry systems and in managing fish ponds, and are provided with technical advice as well as the necessary initial equipment and tools.

Review of the first Climate Fund project

Joint reforestation and knowledge-sharing in the Wampís Territory

Thanks to an initial grant of 10,000 euros, two schools in the indigenous communities of Nueva Algería and San Juan de Morona were supported in reforesting woodland areas, creating school gardens and passing on traditional knowledge to the younger generation. Over 190 pupils took part, 10 hectares of woodland were sustainably restored and 200 tree seedlings were planted – a successful start for the Climate Fund!
