Google Earth for municipalities

For data-driven municipal climate action

Google Earth empowers local climate action with high-resolution geospatial data.

Climate Alliance is bridging the gap between global satellite technology and local climate policy. By leveraging the immense power of Google Earth and other Google resilience tools, we provide our member municipalities with the visual evidence and data precision needed to plan, implement and monitor effective climate strategies.

The power of Google Earth in your municipality

Google Earth is more than just a map. For cities and towns, it is a powerful tool and can serve as critical infrastructure for:

  • Understanding flood history to prevent climate disaster and inform better investments.
  • Visualising urban sprawl and transport corridors to design more sustainable, low-emission mobility networks.
  • Global 20- and 40-meter elevation contours for instant topographic site planning.
  • Monitoring urban heat islands and identifying priority areas for new green spaces to enhance local climate adaptation.
  • Using high-resolution 3D imagery to calculate the solar energy capacity of every rooftop in your district.
  • Enhanced support for KML, KMZ, SHP and GeoJSON imports to integrate your private data with Google’s digital twin.
  • Using “Ask Google Earth” to turn natural language into geospatial insights in seconds (soon available in Europe).

Climate Alliance and Google: A strategic partnership

Since 2023, Climate Alliance has been an official Google partner. This unique collaboration allows us to act as a bridge between the tech giant and local governments. We help our nearly 2,000 member cities and towns navigate these complex datasets, turning raw satellite imagery into actionable policy insights.

We are currently developing local case studies to demonstrate how cities across Europe are already using Google Earth data to meet their CO2 reduction targets and improve the quality of life for their citizens.

Interested in exploring Google Earth data for your municipality? Climate Alliance is happy to support you in researching, analysing, and evaluating these tools to ensure your climate measures are backed by the best data available.

Environmental Insights Explorer

Google’s Environmental Insights Explorer (EIE) is another poweful data analysis and statistics tool, making use of exclusive data sources to provide relevant information for the design of sustainable and climate-friendly cities and regions. Around 40,000 municipalities worldwide already use the tool, relying on a comprehensive and reliable data base to strengthen municipal climate protection and local climate adaptation.

EIE datasets include:

  • Building Emissions Data: Estimated emissions from heating, cooling, and energy supply across the building stock.
  • Transport Analytics: Aggregated, anonymized data on trips taken within city limits to better understand mobility footprints.
