Green Footprints
Children on the move for climate action
The Green Footprints campaign gets our youngest citizens excited about the climate!
Raising children’s awareness of sustainability and inspiring their teachers and parents at the same time – our Green Footprints campaign has been doing just this for over 20 years now. This low-threshold initiative is a great way for local governments to get their educational institutions and citizens, both young and old, excited about climate action in a fun way – making citizen egagement child’s play!
How it works
Children in participating classes aim to collect as many “green footprints” as possible during the chosen campaign period with their climate-friendly journeys on foot, by bike or by train. They can also collect “red footprints” for eating regional food and “blue footprints” for energy savings. Climate Alliance provides numerous materials to make running the campaign as easy as possible for educational institutions – from informational sheets for parents to albums for the footprints collected and accompanying booklets and certificates for the children. Offers such as a “climate world tour” or a guide to climate-friendly procurement are also included in the campaign package.
Why take part?
After the campaign period, the footprints collected by all participating municipalities and educational institutions are presented to the UN Climate Secretariat each year in a high-profile ceremony at the international climate conference. In this way, Climate Alliance sends a strong message and gives a voice to society’s youngest members on the importance of climate action. Municipalities can also use the activities connected with the presentation of the footprints at the Climate Summits and the realisation of the campaign locally for their own public relations work. The Green Footprints campaign is also a good opportunity for cities and towns to work directly with their educational institutions, thus strengthening important ties.
