The EU budget proposal and its impact on municipal funding

19 February 2026 | 11:00 – 12:15 | online

Currently, the European Commission and Council are jostling over heated negotiations of the EU’s next budget covering EU spending for 2028-2033. With a complete re-vamp of priorities on how the EU should allocate and spend the funds as well as who will do the allocating, budgetary planning has never looked so different for the EU. The changes deeply impact not only the EU’s identity but local governments’ access to funding.

Climate Alliance thus has worked on the topic of the next EU budget. The Commission’s proposal is on the table and the European Council has now given its consent but the deal is far from done. With the Local Alliance – a coalition of Europe’s leading local and regional government networks – we released a toolkit with tips and links to resources on how local authorities can help soften any fallout.

This exclusive webinar is poised to give interested Climate Alliance members insight into what is at stake and what cities and regions can do about it. Participants of this online session can expect:

  • a recap of the budget architecture, especially as it relates to climate expenditures
  • where the budget negotiations stand, including wins and losses for the municipal level
  • what this means for the European Union in the coming years
  • what Climate Alliance is doing with other city networks in the negotiating process
  • how local authorities can help soften the fallout
