New Climate Fund project: Preserving indigenous territories & protecting the rainforest

Climate Alliance is continuing its successful collaboration with the Autonomous Territorial Government of the Wampís (GTANW) this year and is launching the second project under the Climate Fund. The new project aims to support 30 Wampís families in establishing agroforestry systems using cocoa and native tree species. Through training, technical advice and the provision of tools, the families are learning to propagate high-quality cocoa plants themselves and to manage their farmland sustainably. Growing cocoa within an agroforestry system protects the soil, preserves the forest structure and, at the same time, creates a long-term source of income for the families. In addition, the project aims to support the establishment of ten sustainable fish ponds. Fish farming improves food security and provides families with additional income through the sale of surplus fish at local markets. Here too, the families receive training and the necessary initial equipment.
