Hochtaunus Adaptation Forum

Regional forums on adaptation to climate change in the Hochtaunus region (DE)

A the gates of Germany’s Rhine-Main area, only 30 km northwest of Frankfurt, lies the Taunus region

The scenic and cultural diversity of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Limes attracts several million people every year to this low mountain range in the Rhine-Main metropolitan region. Climate change is already very visitble in the forested and higher-altitude Taunus Main ridge – the Hochtaunus. The large-scale dieback of the Spruce trees for which the area has become too warm and dry is one sign of this and similar climate effects can be seen for many other plant and animal species. A functioning biotope is critical to reinforce the adaptive capacity of ecosystems and species.

The joint project on ‘Regional Forums for Adaptation to Climate Change in the Hochtaunus Region’ aimed to promote and further develop coordination and the exchange of experiences relating to adaptation to climate change in the region. As part of various exchange and networking activities, practical strategies for climate adaptation in the areas of agriculture, forestry and tourism were discussed, developed and implemented in two pilot projects. In view of increasing drought, heavy rainfall events and temperature rises, ways were to be identified in which regional actors could effectively meet these challenges. The project was carried out by Climate Alliance in cooperation with the Hochtaunus district and funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV).

The project focused on organising low-threshold exchange and networking events for relevant stakeholders from the region and testing specific climate adaptation measures on site. Thematic exchange forums were used to identify needs, discuss possible solutions and share experiences. This led to two pilot projects: the establishment of a forest nursery to promote climate-resilient tree species in Neu-Anspach and the creation of small water bodies as a water retention measure in the Schmitten municipal forest. Both projects contribute to improving ecological stability and serve as transferable examples for other municipalities. Another key project outcome is the online database ‘Clibrary’, which serves as an exchange platform for municipal best practice examples in the areas of climate adaptation, climate protection and biodiversity and ensures the inter-municipal exchange of experience beyond the end of the project.
