Gender Mainstreaming in Municipal Climate Protection (GeKo)

Anchoring gender equality in municipal climate action

In order for climate action measures to be fully effective, social aspects must be taken into account and therefore knowledge about gender equality must be shared.

So far, however, gender mainstreaming has hardly been taken into account in municipal climate action. There is a lack of fundamental strategies and agreements to systematically integrate gender mainstreaming into climate action measures.

By taking gender-specific aspects and needs into account in local climate action, broader social approval is achieved, injustices are prevented and the overall impact of the planned measures is increased. The inclusion of gender equality can reveal untapped potential in the transformation process that is necessary to achieve a carbon-neutral society.

This is precisely where the new German Climate Alliance project comes in. The project is working with up to 15 German model municipalities to develop concepts for gender-sensitive climate action measures. The aim is for the municipalities to build up their own expertise and transfer this to climate protection measures that have already been planned or to overcome potential obstacles that have already been recognised. Joint training sessions are organised locally in which gender mainstreaming tools are applied to municipal climate action. This creates an understanding of how gender equality can be integrated into the conceptualisation and implementation of measures.
