Social Climate Fund: EU countries continue to leave out cities & regions
Local Alliance publishes new briefing on the Social Climate Fund.
The briefing shows that member states are still sidelining local and regional authorities in the design of their national plans to disperse the money of the Social Climate Fund. This finding is based on a Local Alliance survey showing that engagement with towns, cities and regions is often delayed, irregular or missing entirely.
Local consultation should, however, not be considered just “nice to have” as it is a legal obligation according to the Social Climate Fund Regulation. The Social Climate Fund is designed to support vulnerable households in coping with the costs of decarbonsation – particularly in energy and transport. Without the input of municipal representatives, national plans risk missing the mark in addressing the realities on the ground.
The full briefing is now available online. Climate Alliance has helped shape this document as part of the Local Alliance, comprised of Europe’s largest local and regional networks. The alliance works to ensure that local and regional governments have the means to implement local climate action.
