Press Release: City Cycling sets the tone for a sustainable mobility transformation

Winning municipalities in the world’s largest cycling campaign honoured yesterday in Rheine (DE)

Rheine / Frankfurt am Main, 27 November 2025. Last night in the city of Rheine, this year’s winning municipalities in the Climate Alliance’s City Cycling campaign were honoured. The trophies were presented by Rheine’s mayor, Dr Peter Lüttmann, the district administrator of Steinfurt, Dr Martin Sommer, North Rhine-Westphalia’s State Secretary for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport, Viktor Haase, and André Muno, Managing Director of Climate Alliance Services. There was every reason to celebrate, as the City Cycling campaign once again surpassed last year’s results: more than 1.2 million people from over 3,000 municipalities got on their bikes. Together, the participants covered almost 238 million kilometres by bike, not only avoiding 38,900 tonnes of CO2 compared to driving a car, but also sending a powerful message about climate action and promoting cycling.

Rheine’s mayor, Dr Peter Lüttmann, emphasises the city’s commitment to cycling and the signal effect that City Cycling has: “For many years, we in Rheine have been strongly committed to promoting cycling. Our goal is to establish cycling and walking as key forms of mobility in the urban area. Our repeated success in City Cycling confirms this commitment.” Rheine took first place in the “most cycling-friendly municipality” category for three years in a row. Although the city had to relinquish the title this year, its motivation remains unbroken. “We are doing everything we can to achieve another top ranking in City Cycling 2026. At the same time, we will continue our efforts to further expand and continuously improve the cycling infrastructure in Rheine,” Dr Lüttmann continued.

State Secretary Haase also sees this year’s number of participants in City Cycling as a clear signal that sends a message to politicians and administrators: “More than 1.2 million cyclists taking part in City Cycling impressively demonstrate how great the willingness to switch is.

To do so, they need safe and comfortable cycle paths. That is why we are consistently pushing ahead with the expansion of cycling infrastructure – it is a central element of the mobility transition.”

For André Muno, Managing Director of Climate Alliance Services, the success of the campaign is also reflected in the further development of the associated tools. This year, for example, the new Bike Monitor cycling data platform was presented to the German City Cycling municipalities: “We are thus offering municipalities and ministries an important building block for data-based and cycling-friendly infrastructure planning. They can see at a glance, for example, where cycle traffic flows well or where it is slowed down by long traffic light phases.” The platform collates anonymised route data from almost 500,000 City Cycling app users. This data is evaluated by transport scientists at Dresden Technical University and their partner Vision Velo.

City Cycling is an international campaign by Climate Alliance Services and is supported by partners Ortlieb, linexo by WERTGARANTIE, ABUS, Busch + Müller, Schwalbe, WSM, QiO and Paul Lange & Co.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, the campaign is supported by ADFC North Rhine-Westphalia, AGFS North Rhine-Westphalia, the Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport, and Zukunftsnetz Mobilität NRW.
