Municipalities now have a practical tool to make informed decisions about renovating multi-apartment buildings (MABs): the Simple ROI Calculator. This easy-to-use online tool allows to quickly assess the financial viability of energy renovation projects. By using data such as energy consumption, renovation costs, and property values, municipalities can see projected return on investment (ROI) and payback periods, helping guide responsible budgeting and long-term planning. Municipalities can also recommend this tool to their citizens supporting them in making future-proof decisions and boost energy efficient renovations. The tool comes with a step-by-step guide, including examples, recommended data sources, and practical tips – making it accessible even for staff without technical expertise in energy management or finance. Available in multiple languages, it is designed to support municipalities in planning renovations for public housing, improving energy efficiency, and reducing operational costs while enhancing residents’ living conditions.

The tool was developed in the framework of our CEESEN-BENDER project, which has worked across five countries to identify barriers that hinder renovation efforts and developed practical tools, roadmaps, and support systems to make energy renovation accessible – particularly for vulnerable communities. Municipal leaders, planners, and housing authorities are invited to the CEESEN-BENDER final conference, taking place on 14–15 May in Zagreb, Croatia, to share lessons learned, discuss policy implementation, and explore practical strategies for tackling energy poverty through building renovation.
