New EU Agenda for Cities unveiled

This week, the European Commission released its strategic vision to empower cities and towns on meeting EU goals.

Entitled the “EU Agenda for Cities: Driving Growth and Prosperity”, the document is meant to reinforce the role of cities in Europe’s future. It outlines the progress made for municipalities thus far while also shining a spotlight on remaining challenges and setting out next steps. The agenda also maps currently available funding for cities and towns with a view to the upcoming EU budget, due to take effect as of 2027.

Importantly, the publication sites the following as the three main areas of action in addressing urban challenges in fields such as climate, mobility, housing and social inclusion:

  • continuous dialogue between EU policymakers and the local level
  • simplification and capacity building for example via a new EU Cities Platform and web presence to streamline key information
  • and investment for cities in the form of a variety of additional instruments

Climate Alliance welcomes the publication’s references to small to medium-size municipalities, its direct citing the Covenant of Mayors as a key urban initiative as well as its championing of an inclusive and integrated approach to EU urban policy.
