Call for donations for indigenous partners after shipwreck

An erosion-induced mudslide in Peru resulted in a devastating shipwreck.

On 1 December, a serious shipping accident occurred in the Ucayali region (Iparia district) of the Peruvian Amazon. A mudslide triggered by erosion on the banks of the Ucayali River crashed directly onto the ships moored there, just a few meters from the port. Most of the more than 60 passengers drowned, among them mainly children, women, and teachers from the Shipibo-Konibo people.

The media and relatives of the victims have accused regional and national authorities of failing to take effective and appropriate rescue measures. Seven days after the tragedy, no specialist teams have yet been sent to the area. Local indigenous organisations are understandably alarmed and are calling on the regional government of Ucayali to take action.

Climate Alliance has already provided €1,000 in emergency aid on short notice. With further donations, we want to support the following measures as requested by the Shipibo-Konibo organisations on the ground:

  • Provision of food, medicine and other necessary materials
  • Transport of volunteers and communications specialists to the area
  • Provision of boats allowing authorities and indigenous representatives to access the Iparia district
  • Legal assistance for the family members of victims and lobby work to get authorities to investigate the incident

Support our partners in the Ucayali region!

As a non-profit organisation, Climate Alliance can issue donation receipts for tax purposes. Please be sure to include your email address when making your transfer.
