The Climate Alliance European Secretariat (Brussels Office) is seeking a Coordinator
(m/f/d) to provide maternity cover for the Belgian activities under the European Climate Pact.

For over 35 years, Climate Alliance member municipalities have been acting in partnership with indigenous rainforest peoples for the benefit of the global climate. With over 2,000 members spread across more than 25 countries, Climate Alliance is Europe’s largest city network dedicated to comprehensive and equitable climate action.

 

Climate Alliance is part of the consortium awarded the tender for the European Climate Pact initiative, a key component of the European Green Deal supporting the EU’s objective to become climate neutral by 2050. To ensure effective implementation across all EU Member States, national coordination organisations are appointed in each country. Climate Alliance leads the coordination of the Climate Pact in Belgium and is now looking for an experienced professional to temporarily take over this role during a maternity leave period and ensure continuity of activities and partnerships.

 

The successful candidate will work closely with colleagues in the Brussels office, Climate Alliance national coordination offices in other EU Member States, Climate Pact Country Coordinators across Europe, and with projects managed by Climate Alliance that advance local energy and climate action.
The position involves strategic planning, coordination, implementation, stakeholder engagement and reporting at national level. A central component of the role is the design and implementation of citizen engagement activities in Belgium, building on existing initiatives and strengthening the national Climate Pact community. The coordinator will also support and further develop the growing network of Belgian Climate Pact Ambassadors.

Our ideal candidate

You bring solid academic and professional experience in local climate and energy action, particularly at citizen or community level. You are well connected within the Belgian climate and sustainability landscape, including local and regional authorities and relevant organisations. You combine a strong focus on local implementation with an understanding of EU climate policy developments. You have proven experience in designing and facilitating networking and capacity building activities. Experience or interest in youth engagement and empowerment on climate issues is considered an asset.

 

You are impact driven, able to work independently and collaboratively, and motivated to contribute to a dynamic Brussels based team committed to accelerating a socially just energy transition.

Your tasks

You will be responsible for the continued development and implementation of the European Climate Pact work programme in Belgium, ensuring alignment with Climate Alliance projects and overall mission. This will entail:

  • Further developing and implementing national actions that encourage climate action by individuals and institutions
  • Conducting and updating stakeholder mapping to ensure strong engagement and complementarity with existing initiatives
  • Aligning Belgian activities with consortium and project requirements
  • Coordinating and executing the national work programme in collaboration with Climate Alliance colleagues and other national coordinator.

The work programme includes activities such as:

  • Coordination and promotion of national and local climate action events
  • Recruitment, onboarding, support and capacity development of Belgian Climate Pact Ambassadors
  • Expansion and facilitation of the Belgian Climate Pact community
  • Engagement of youth as catalysts for local climate action
  • Collaboration with educators as multipliers of climate action
  • Translation and adaptation of selected EU Climate Pact materials into Belgian languages, ensuring clarity and relevance for target audiences
  • Concise and regular reporting to the Climate Pact Secretariat and Climate Alliance leadership

Essential requirements

Study & experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience with project management primarily at a local level
  • Experience working in an international environment, particularly working across different cultures and languages
  • Practical experiences in event management, stakeholder facilitation, climate change action related capacity building
  • A master degree in relevant field (e.g. energy management, urban planning). Applicants with interdisciplinary study background are encouraged to apply

Personal skills & skills profile:

  • Working knowledge of English, French and Dutch
  • Strong networking skills, ability to identify opportunities for people and organisations to collaborate on climate change-related actions
  • A strong internal and external communicator
  • Strong organisation skills and able to meet tight deadlines

Advantageous:

  • Knowledge and experience working on climate change at municipal, community and/or citizens level
  • Experience with innovative or effective stakeholder engagement methodologies
  • Experience in working with or in a city or network
  • Any other EU languages are considered as an asset
  • The possibility to start with a short notice

Terms

Contract

The contract will be made between the individual and Climate Alliance under the Belgian law. The corresponding assignment is based on a 6-months full-time contract starting as soon as possible.
