Climate Alliance supports call for ambitious 2040 EU climate target

A broad alliance of 126 civil society organisations, research institutions and companies today appealed to EU leaders in CAN's open letter to achieve an ambitious climate target for 2040 exclusively through domestic action - without resorting to international carbon offsetting under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

The use of international certificates jeopardises the climate targets, as they could reduce domestic climate action, delay the green transition and undermine the EU's credibility. Furthermore, a genuine domestic reduction in emissions is central to the path to climate neutrality. International offset purchases do not fulfil the requirements for ambitious climate protection and put the energy transition at risk. In addition, the regular purchase of certificates could divert financial resources away from real measures to reduce emissions.

In the open letter, the alliance calls on the EU to achieve at least a 90% net emissions reduction by 2040 exclusively through national measures - for a credible and ambitious climate policy in Europe.
