Climate Alliance member Heilbronn (DE) named Green Capital 2027

This week, a high-level jury in bestowed the title of 2027 European Green Capital on the City of Heilbronn (DE) during a ceremony in Vilnius (LT). This win follows on the heals of 2026 European Green Capital titleholder and Climate Alliance member Guimarães (PT). Heilbronn was awarded alongside the municipalities of Assen (NL) and Siena (Italy), which received the 2027 Green Leaf Award for smaller European cities.

“The European Green Capital and European Green Leaf awards, each year, recognise cities that strive to be at the forefront of urban and environmental sustainability. Cities that – simply put – lead by example,” explained European Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy Jessika Roswall.

The City of Heilbronn’s Landscape Plan 2030, which takes a cross sectoral approach to the challenges of noise, climate and air pollution as well as its mobility concept captured the jury’s imagination this year. The Climate Alliance member received praise for the strong focus it places on citizen engagement and awareness raising in its climate strategies as well as for its ambitious 2035 targets and collaborative efforts on a regional level.

Every year, the European Commission holds its green city awards, which include the European Green Capital award for cities with more than 100.000 inhabitants and the European Green Leaf award for municipalities with 20,000 to 99,000 inhabitants. The awards recognise cities taking local action towards a greener future.
