A short welcome and kick-off for the second day of Climate Alliance International Conference 2021by:

  • Ulrike Schwarz, Member of the Parliament of the Province of Upper Austria, representing Stefan Kaineder, Provincial Councillor of the Province of Upper Austria

Discussion "Localising the EU Green Deal"
10 September, 09:15 to 11:15 | Online & streamed in Wels ( EN | DE | RU)

Turning the ongoing crisis into a longer term opportunity for systemic change will not happen easily, but cities are already showing leadership in the recovery process and further accelerating the transition towards climate neutrality. How are the local and regional leaders already localising the EU Green Deal? How to ensure they are (or will soon be) well equipped in their transformation towards climate neutrality? How could the EU further support the local implementation of its Green Deal? These were some of the main questions that our policy session addressed. This session also highlighted some policies and solutions undertaken by Climate Alliance member cities for delivering a genuine societal transformation – thus contributing to making the EU Green Deal a success.

Workshop "Soil protection is climate protection: Politics and practice"
10 September, 11:30 to 13:00 | In Wels (Welios) & online | (EN | DE | RU (online)) – brought to you by Climate Alliance Upper Austria

Soils play a central role in climate processes. Soil protection can and must therefore also be part of the solution to the climate problem. Municipalities play a decisive role in this context as many soil-relevant decisions are made at the municipal level when it comes to spatial planning and construction but also in the design and maintenance of public spaces and buildings. The Soil and Land Alliance is committed to raising awareness for a more sustainable use of soils. In this workshop we showed how sustainable soil use can contribute to overcoming the climate crisis and to the European Green Deal as well as how soil protection in municipalities can succeed. Practical examples were presented such as the project "Our soil for bees – bee-friendly town of Wels" or the vacancy management of Trofaiach, Austria.

Workshop "On the way to zero emission mobility: Strategies and examples from Europe, Austria and Upper Austria"
10 September, 11:30 to 13:00 | In Wels (Minorite Monastery) & online | (EN | DE) – brought to you by Climate Alliance Upper Austria

The transport sector is one of the keys to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and represents a major challenge in achieving climate goals. In this workshop, strategies and exemplary examples of sustainable mobility efforts both the European level and in Austria were highlighted and discussed.

Workshop "A Spring Forward - Climate-Neutral Companies: Let's get active!"
10 September, 11:30 to 13:00 | In Wels (Hotel Hauser) | (DE) – brought to you by Climate Alliance Upper Austria

The topic of sustainability is already part of the corporate strategy for the majority of businesses in Austria. Climate and sustainability considerations are having an increasing impact on decision-makers in companies throughout Europe as well. In order to achieve the climate goals of the Paris Agreement, companies will have to pay even more attention in the future to keeping the ecological footprint of their business activities as small as possible and to minimising CO2 emissions. In this workshop, we presented information on possible actions and tools that can help companies on the path to climate neutrality.

Workshop "Integrated spatial energy planning"
10 September, 11:30 to 13:00 | In Wels (Stadttheater Greif) | (DE) – brought to you by Climate Alliance Upper Austria

Urban planning creates the conditions to determine long-term energy consumption patterns. Integrated spatial energy planning is a modern planning approach that takes the complexity of cities and towns as well as the need to create sustainable and resilient settlement structures into account. The aim of the workshop was to present the P2P learning method between municipalities in the field of integrated energy space planning as well as a tool for calculating and monitoring energy savings and CO2 emissions.

Materials

Workshop "Energy-Innovation from Austria: Climate and Energy Fund"
10 September, 11:30 to 13:00 | In Wels (Minorite Monastery) | (DE) – brought to you by Climate Alliance Upper Austria

The Climate and Energy Fund offers municipalities and regions a broad portfolio of support options. In addition to the Climate and Energy Model Regions and Climate Change Adaptation Model Regions, which are unique in Europe, these include further funding opportunities on the topics of model renovations, photovoltaics, electricity storage, solar systems, thermal storage, (electric) mobility and green financing. In this workshop, we presented climate-relevant regional programmes of the Climate and Energy Fund (Climate and Energy Model Regions and Clear Change Adaptation Regions) as well as other funding programmes relevant to municipalities.

Workshop "CO2-Pricing for municipalities"
10 September, 11:30 - 13:00 | Online | (EN)

Last year Climate Alliance together and Klimaatverbond created a working group on CO2 pricing, with the goal to develop a European municipal CO2 pricing system linked to the Covenant of Mayors and based on the experiences of the municipalities in the Netherlands.
This year, we are preparing an EU tender to define and implement a CO2 pricing model and link it to procurement and circular economy strategies at the municipal level. In this workshop, we want to exchange with municipalities about the tender preparation and the possible selection of municipalities as pilot cities for the project application.
