The Mayor of Essen, Thomas Kufen, invited Climate Alliance members for drinks, light snacks and an informal exchange on the 22nd floor of Essen’s City Hall. A special highlight was Oro Verde's "Here and there" exhibition on consumption and the rainforest.

    1. Climate migrants (in plenary)

      Dina Ionesco, Head of the Migration, Environment and Climate Change Division of the International Organisation for Migration on global migration flows, setting those fleeing their homes as a result of climate change in the spotlight.
    2. Transformation as an opportunity for adaptation

      See how Essen is using broader urban transformation processes as an opportunity to adapt to climate change and exchange with other municipal representatives on the subject.
    3. Fossil free!

      How can the local level go fossil free and supply energy needs with 100% renewable energies? Share your ideas and help revitalise the “100% Renewable Energy Regions” network in Germany.
    4. Divest!
      Hear from cities that have divested from fossil fuels to ensure that municipal investments support local climate policy. How can we make better use of our public funds?
    5. Empowering neighbourhoods

      Discuss how a focus on neighbourhood-based, bottom-up approaches can raise awareness for both sustainability and energy saving while leading to lasting engagement.

      How can we work together to change Climate Culture? Understand what an important role cultural aspects play in successful climate action.
    8. Fair lifestyles
      Get exposure to examples of fair and sustainable micro movements in Essen using the GreenApes city app as your “sustainable” tour guide.
    9. Local financing for local energy

      See how participatory financing via energy cooperatives in collaboration with local authorities can accelerate investments towards a just energy transition.
    10. Think bike!
      Experience Essen’s sustainable mobility by bike on the new RS1 bicycle highway and discuss how the right city planning can promote climate-friendly transport.
    11. Making use of geothermal
      (GRETA project informational sheet)
      Geothermal energy sources can provide great opportunities for sustainable energy. Discuss this often overlooked resource as well as the opportunities and challenges associated with its use.

    1. 15:00 – 18:00 Green Capital bike tour (EN | DE)
      This 25 km bike tour leads through Essen’s northern districts to a number of interesting examples of climate action including Essen’s largest solar installation, a sustainable industrial park, the Elting district’s energy make-over, the Hexbachtal nature reserve and the green infrastruture of Lake Niederfeld.
    2. 14:30 – 17:00 The Zollverein Coal Mine by e-bus (DE)

      Experience an important part of Essen’s past via electric bus. The Zollverein World Heritage Site, with its impressive architecture and perfectly preserved facilities, is a testimony to Essen’s transformation, having produced some 240 million tons of coal until operations ceased in 1986.
    4. 15:00 – 18:00 Stormwater management (EN | DE)
      See how stormwater is managed on large and small scales as well as how its effect is taken into account in urban design and flood protection in the Emscher river basin. Brought to you by the Emscher Cooperative and Lippeverband as well as by POWER, an EU project on sustainable water management.
