Renewable energies for Amazonia – Supporting COICA’s energy strategy

Many indigenous communities in the Amazon region have no access to the public grid and are dependent on exactly those oil companies that threaten their very existence. For light and electricity, they have to resort to power generators and oil lamps, both of which are very harmful to health and the environment. In order to tackle this issue, COICA is working on a strategy for renewable energy. Climate Alliance is supporting this endeavor through a renewable energy fund launched during COICA’s 35th anniversary celebration in March 2019.

Initiatives such as the basic provision with electricity through solar lamps or pilot projects with solar-powered boats enable indigenous communities to access clean and affordable energy. These measures suit the local conditions and can be implemented by the communities themselves.

In order to promote these approaches, donations are collected from Climate Alliance members in Europe and passed on to COICA and its member organisations for specific projects. The project initiatives come directly from indigenous partners and are supported after consultation with Climate Alliance.
