Covenant of Mayors for SDG Localisation in Belarusian cities

56 municipalities in Belarus have signed the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, committing themselves to concrete measures for climate change mitigation and adaptation. Yet major challenges to realising the commitments made and aligning them with strategies for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals exist. Crucially, the organisation coordinating Covenant signatories in Belarus lacks the resources to provide the necessary support.

This project enables the Interakcia Foundation in Minsk to support the municipalities of Korma and Smorgon in harmonising Covenant commitments and national sustainable development goals. This includes local data collection and monitoring for the assessment of climate adaptation measures, access to EU best practice examples, engagement of key stakeholders, and raising awareness of climate mitigation and adaptation measures.

The goal of the project is to facilitate concrete action on localising the SDGs in Korma and Smorgon – improving access to clean energy, increasing climate resiliency, adaptating to climate change and strengthening partnerships. Interakcia Foundation, in turn, will then be able to better respond and replicate experiences in other Belarusian municipalities.

Climate Alliance is supporting the project by organizing an  exchange with German municipalities and through the adaptation and use of the Change-the-Future tool in Belarus.

Project funding period: August 2020 – December 2021
via the Funding Program Belarus (FpB), run by the International Association for Education and Exchange (IBB) Dortmund on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ).
