Bike to School – how cool!

Digital toolbox to promote cycling among children and young people for use in schools

The participatory German project is about combining mobility, democracy and media education. Digital tools are being developed to promote cycling among children and young people at schools and for mobility education in lessons and project work, which are to be made available on an online platform for all schools in Lower Saxony (DE).

As part of the project, Climate Alliance is further developing the German school cycling competition in Lower Saxony, which is embedded in the CITY CYCLING campaign. One focus is on the CITY CYCLING app, which is supplemented by interesting CO2 comparisons from the world of children and young people and related background information. When the app is used by the students at the twenty model schools, the school journeys made by bike are recorded anonymously during the school cycling event. The data obtained in this way is available to the model schools for analysis and teaching purposes. In dialogue with local politicians and administrators, students can use this data to develop ideas for remedying problems in the vicinity of the schools and projects to improve cycling in their community.

The project partners are the Lower Saxony Ministry of Culture, Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences (endowed professorship for cycle traffic management) and the software company flow.d GmbH.

Project funding period: October 2023 – September 2026
via the National Cycling Plan (NRVP) of the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport Affairs (BMDV); the project organiser is the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM)
