European Citizens' Initiative “30 km/h – making the streets liveable!”
![]() |
The European Commission has officially accepted the European Citizens' Initiative “30 km/h – making the streets liveable!” in November 2012, after a two-month legal check. The proposal: An EU-wide default speed limit of 30 km/h in urban areas, unless local authorities set other speed limits for certain sections. Such a scheme is simple, effective and inexpensive. Past experiences with speed limit of 30 km/h have shown that the number and severity of accidents as well as noise and exhaust pollution decrease significantly.
Climate Alliance and 40 other organisations support the initiative and call for signing the public petition. If the initiative succeeds to have more than one million verified signatures from at least seven EU countries by 13 November 2013, the European Commission must consider the proposal within three months and possibly follow with a legislative proposal.

bike + business
![]() |
Since 2003, the project bike + business has been managed by the ADFC Hessen and the Regionalverband FrankfurtRheinMain (Regional Authority FrankfurtRheinMain); Climate Alliance is supporting and promoting the project.
Bicycles provide a modern, integrable means of sustainable transport that is compatible with urban life. Especially in built up areas like the Rhein-Main region, choosing to cycle alleviates pressure on the roads and results in an improvement of local public transport networks. In cities there are three main identifiable traffic elements: school traffic, commercial traffic and commuter traffic. bike + business works to help encourage those commuting to and from work to get onto a bike rather than into a car.
The conceptual frame and time frame of the project were formulated in accordance with the National Bicycle Plan 2002-2012 set by the German government. The project aims lie specifically in the coordination of interests between employees who cycle and their employers. This coordination is achieved by propagating a positive modern image of bicycles as a means of transport, linking up bike use and public transport possibilities and most importantly increasing the numbers of cyclists on the streets, as a part local, part regional engagement with politics and planning.
