Launch of the European Covenant Board of Mayors to steer the initiative

Climate Alliance appoints Province of Barcelona to take seat amongst this newly established group

On Friday the European Covenant of Mayors launched its newly appointed political board of Mayors, which will provide cities and regions a unique opportunity to have their say on the strategic orientation of the initiative and EU policy. Province of Barcelona President Mercè Conesa i Pagès has been appointed by Climate Alliance as one of the seven board members, which will be in direct dialogue with the European institutions on how best to serve the needs and expectations municipalities. The board is composed of mayors and locally and regionally elected representatives from across the EU.

“I can speak from experience when I say that the cooperation between the Covenant signatories and their provinces and regions, but also the national and the EU levels in the pursuit of a common goal is one of the success factors of the Covenant,” explained Mercè Conesa i Pagès, who, in addition to her role as the President of Barcelona Province, also serves as Mayor of San Cugat del Vallés, Spain. The Province of Barcelona, Climate Alliance member since 2010 and the Covenant’s first territorial coordinator, is now providing technical and financial assistance to more than 200 municipalities committed to the initiative in the province.

"The EU Covenant of Mayors is definitely one of Europe's major success stories,” affirmed Maroš Šefčovič, vice-president of the European Commission. “Never before have so many cities joined forces, eager to inspire each other and committed to collectively taking the path to a low-carbon future.” This first board meeting, held in Brussels, was attended by Šefčovič as well as by former UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres and other key representatives of EU institutions.
