Working group on financing

Unlocking potential

Adequate financing is often a key stumbling block in getting local climate and energy projects off the ground. To overcome the increasing budgetary as well as debt and capacity related constraints, local authorities must explore a wide, sometimes overwhelming variety of financing possibilities. Climate Alliance established the Working Group on Financing in 2012 to help interested local authorities get clarity on the great potential that exists to fund their initiatives. The working group focuses both on European support programmes and on exchanging local experience with innovative financing models. The group discusses holistic financing solutions for a diverse range of climate and energy projects in need of financial backing as well as challenges regarding the bankability of projects.

The working group in action

The Working Group on Financing advocates for financing solutions that are better tailored to Climate Alliance members. It enables direct discussions with EU-level policy makers on topics such as financial bottlenecks and access to funding, while allowing members to feed their examples as arguments and evidence into our policy work. These examples also gain visibility during prominent European events such as the European Sustainable Energy Week.

The group provides feedback on capacity-building activities at the local level as well as European policy recommendations to foster increased support for climate protection investments. Semi-annual working group meetings as well as direct mailings, newsletters and brokerage events throughout the year facilitate pro-active matchmaking and information sharing for potential EU projects amongst group members and beyond. Members also receive regular updates on recent European financing opportunities as well as financing-related policy briefings.

The Working Group is open to all Climate Alliance members. Passive membership, choosing only to receive information via the mailing list, is also possible.
