Covenant of Mayors on Climate & Energy

Raising the profile of local authorities

From its beginnings, Climate Alliance has argued that local authorities help turn climate action pledges into concrete action. They carry out important measures in their territories and push their national governments towards more ambitious goals, helping ensure that the goals of the Paris Agreement are met. With the Covenant of Mayors, the European Commission has given this understanding official backing.

Climate Alliance has been one of the driving forces of this initiative from the very beginning. Launched in 2008, the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy has attracted over 10,000 local authorities across Europe and beyond. On the heels of this success, the Covenant of Mayors officially went global in 2016. Climate Alliance remains a key player in both the European and international contexts.
