Kick-off of the RES Champions League

Play now!

Press release April 24th 2009

The RES Champions League, a renewable energy competition between European cities and municipalities, has officially been launched in Brussels on April 23rd 2009 during the Joint Annual Rendezvous of Climate Alliance and Énergie-Cités.

Every city and municipality can join the RES Champions League. Participation is free and just one click away. Solar (photovoltaic and thermal) and wood (heat) installations are considered.

How is the ranking established?

It is based on installed power (or area) per inhabitant. In addition to the general ranking, in which all cities, towns and villages compete, three divisions have been established upon the number of inhabitants:

  • small cities and towns (between 5,000 and 19,999 inhabitants);
  • medium cities and towns (between 20,000 and 99,999 inhabitants);
  • large cities and towns (more than 100,000 inhabitants)

How to participate in the competition?
Cities and municipalities have to register to a national RES league to participate in the RES Champions League. Leagues have already been established in Bulgaria, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary and Poland. The RES Champions League is open to more national leagues!

Different players can engage their city or municipality in the competition: elected representatives and technical staff of of the local authority, renewable energy producers and installers, energy agencies, NGOs and even individuals!

Why participating?

In order for cities and municipalities to compare their efforts and achievements with others at local, regional, national and European levels - just for fun!

Goals of RES Champions League are also:

  • to foster investment in renewable energy;
  • to create or strengthen a local dynamic towards a sustainable use of energy.
